7a) Combat -- Overview

Overview

Almost every role-playing game (certainly those of the old-school variety) contains a combat system. These vary in lethality from the 'heroic' extreme, of allowing high-powered characters to soak up enough damage to kill a room full of people, to the 'realistic' extreme, where anyone can die from a single bullet, knife thrust, lucky punch or bad fall from a horse.
Combat in Lead and Chrome tends towards the lethal end of this spectrum, which is intentional on the part of the author. If you're worried about a high death rate among player characters, tell them to follow these simple rules:
  1. Don't get into a fight unless the odds are in your favour.
  2. Use intelligent tactics – don't charge straight at a machine gun.
  3. Take cover! (and wear body armour) – don't just stand there and take it. Furniture is not effective cover from gunfire!
  4. Be aware of the effective range of your weapons and those of your opponents.
Resolving combat in Lead and Chrome follows for basic steps: determining initiative (and declaring actions), attacks, penetration and wounding.
