Almost every role-playing game (certainly those of the
old-school variety) contains a combat system. These vary in
lethality from the 'heroic' extreme, of allowing high-powered
characters to soak up enough damage to kill a room full of people,
to the 'realistic' extreme, where anyone can die from a single
bullet, knife thrust, lucky punch or bad fall from a horse.
Combat
in Lead
and Chrome
tends towards the lethal end of this spectrum, which is intentional
on the part of the author. If you're worried about a high death rate
among player characters, tell them to follow these simple rules:
- Don't get into a fight unless the odds are in your favour.
- Use intelligent tactics – don't charge straight at a machine gun.
- Take cover! (and wear body armour) – don't just stand there and take it. Furniture is not effective cover from gunfire!
- Be aware of the effective range of your weapons and those of your opponents.
Resolving
combat in Lead
and Chrome
follows for basic steps: determining initiative (and declaring
actions), attacks, penetration and wounding.
